This year students will be working in sketchbooks that will be kept at school until the end of the year. There are several assignments that students will be required to complete. These assignments were designed to supplement student learning, practice art making techniques and prepare for future works of art. Students should work independently and at their own pace to learn more about art and art making. This is a free choice (differentiated) activity that also encourages students to use art room centers. Sketchbooks will be graded twice per year (December and May). The more assignments they complete, the better grade they will receive. However, I encourage students to draw at home for practice, enjoyment and self-expression. Here are some sketchbook prompts that maybe used to encourage your young artist to create at home:
· Draw a picture of a leaf or a flower. Study it closely and draw exactly what you see. Add lots of details.
· Draw a picture of a person or an animal using shapes and lines to create an abstract work of art.
· Draw a picture of yourself. Use a mirror and try to draw exactly what you see. Practice using a proportion map if you are in 4th or 5th grade.
· Create a work of art inspired by an artist we studied. Think about what made their art interesting and unique.
· Create a work of art that tells a story about your favorite memory. Include lots of details.
· Create a work of art that uses color to express how you are feeling. How does the color you selected express your feelings? Why did you select that color?
· Observe an object in your home. Create a work of art that uses value to move from light to dark.
· Create a work of art inspired by your environment.
- Create a visual journal. Draw, write or sketch how you are feeling. Try to fill the page. Its ok if words or pictures overlap.
· Create your own sketchbook ideas. Remember turn on your light and have lots of fun!!
Thanks for your support in making the art room a great place to learn!
